About Injection Molding

Injection molding is the most common modern method of manufacturing plastic parts. It is used to create a variety of parts with different shapes and sizes, and it is ideal for producing high volumes of the same plastic part. Injection molding is widely used for manufacturing a variety of parts, from the smallest medical device component to entire body panels of cars. A manufacturing process for producing plastic parts from both thermoplastic and thermosetting materials, injection molding can create parts with complex geometries that many other processes cannot.

The first step of getting a plastic part injection molded is to have a computer-aided design (CAD) model of the part produced by a design engineer. The three-dimensional (3D) CAD model then goes to an injection molding company where a mold maker (or toolmaker) will make the mold (tool) that will be fitted into an injection molding machine to make the parts.

Molds are precision-machined usually from steel or aluminum, and can become quite complex depending on the design of the part. Plastic materials shrink at different rates when they cool, so the mold has to be constructed with consideration for the shrinkage rate of the material being used for the parts. In other words, a formula is applied in the construction of the mold to slightly increase the size so that when the plastic shrinkage occurs, the part will be to the dimensional specifications of the CAD model.

50 ~ 1,000+ injection molding products

We usually make a completely independent mold with pre-hardened P20 steel or 7075 aluminum alloy. We may customize cooling circuits, hot nozzles or other improvements to facilitate the production of resin injection modeling or complex shapes. Polished stainless steel NAK-80 will be used for polishing or high-quality products. Low-volume injection molding is ideal for hundreds to thousands of products with different complexities.

1,000 ~ 100,000+ injection molding products

With respect to molds for trial production, we usually make a complete set of molds with pre-hardened and high-quality P20 steel or NAk-80 stainless steel. This mold is same to such molds in other scales except for its hardness. We do not export this kind of molds for the purpose of saving cost and time. In addition, all pre-production or transition molds are manufactured up to local standards. Low-volume injection molding is ideal for hundreds to thousands of products with different complexities. Although high in mold processing expenses, this process generates a low product cost.

100,000+ injection molding products

As the real batch injection molds, such products may be exported to foreign countries for the purpose of production (currently only available to US). In full compliance with international standards, such molds are generally used for 8-cavities injection molding of 500t at most, and the steels available are P20, H13 or NAK 80. Such molds may be used for opening and closing, multi-slide, thread de-molding, etc.

Plastic Injection Molding Tolerances

All plastic material will expand and contract under the influence of heat and moisture. Our tolerance guide will give more general information on the characteristics of most common resin types for typical part features.

We will work closely with you to optimize your designs for manufacturing. We will indicate any areas where poor design may produce thermal stress, shrinkage, warping, etc. Consult our design guide for more information on common defects and how to avoid them.Unless otherwise specified, we comply with the DIN 16742 standard tolerances for plastic injection moldings.
